In the Czech Republic, the parliament has approved an extension of the coronavirus emergency up to and including December 23. There were 53 members of parliament in Prague yesterday. The proposal to extend the state of emergency by 30 days until January 11 was not accepted by the minority government of Prime Minister Andrei Babis.
The state of emergency allows the government to suspend basic rights such as freedom of assembly. Currently, up to ten people are allowed to meet indoors. There is an extensive obligation to wear masks.
However, resistance is growing: Some restaurant and bar owners openly threaten to disregard the current curfew at 8 p.m. The opposition criticizes some of the measures as “absolutely nonsense”. After recent loosening, the number of cases in the Czech Republic is rising again.
Yesterday the authorities reported 5,848 new infections within 24 hours – more than in two weeks. In total, there have already been almost 557,000 infections and more than 9,100 deaths. The Czech Republic has 10.7 million inhabitants.
